OWD Holidays is a family run business offering tailor made holidays and short breaks. Oliver Walter is a UK advanced dressage rider and trainer and therefore we specialise in horse riding and dressage training holidays, however, with the amazing landscape it is perfect for individuals or families to simply enjoy walking or cycling through the acres of forestry commission or just to relax in the grounds of the gite and enjoy the panoramic French countryside views.

For the historians, there is plenty to see within the region with destinations such as the well known Château de Chinon (20km), a medieval castle (the largest fortress in France) which at times served as the residence of the Kings of France and England. Château du Grand Pressigny (44 km) was restored in 1560 and the quality of its architecture, panoramic views from the top of the Vironne Tower and impressive gardens make the Chateau an interesting place to visit or there is the Château de Villandry (45 km) noted as the last great Chateaux of the Loire built during the Renaissance reflecting the sober elegance of its architecture combined with the charm of its outstanding gardens make this one of the jewels of world heritage.

30km from Chinon is the ancient town of Loudun and its numerous old streets, buildings and monuments of which five are Government listed, it’s also the location of a Vicus archaeological site. South of Chinon is the 17th century town of Richelieu, known as the ‘ideal city’ of its time and as such much of the architecture is reputed to be of historical importance. La Rochelle, guarded by medieval twin towers, is one of the most photographed harbours on France’s Atlantic coast, the colourful hub of a town packed with history and heritage, tempting boutiques and cosy restaurants.

If a slightly busier scene is more to your likening, then not too far away is Poitiers, the capital of the Vienne department and of the Poitou-Charentes region. Typical of the area, the centre is picturesque and its streets are interesting for predominant remains of historical architecture,   from the Romanesque period but this is where you head if the busier nightlife is what you are seeking, it is full of bars, restaurants and clubs.

For the youngsters, a must is an all day visit to Futuroscope Theme Park (37 km), set in 130 acres and located near Poitiers. Using audio-visual technology, giant 3D screens, circular cinemas and other state-of-the-art technologies it creates a breathtaking experience unlike any other. And to keep the amusement flowing, visit Puy du Fou, voted the ‘world’s best park’ transporting you through the centuries in the depth of a 100 year old forest, it’s 25th anniversary brings an explosion of new attractions for 2013 – top tip, book online before you go to secure discounted prices!

And not forgetting our equestrian visitors. Why not pop along to visit the home of the French equestrian display team ‘Le Cadre Noir’ founded in 1828, it’s just 40 minutes away in the city of Saumur where in line with area's equestrian tradition Saumur Castle also serves as a Museum of the Horse. In 1972 the National School of Equitation was formed around Le Cadre Noir and is considered one of the most prestigious horsemanship schools in the world, with about 50 horses and a team of 22 elite riders, some being Olympic or world champions. The Cadre Noir mainly uses Thoroughbreds, Anglo-Arabians, Hanoverians and Selle Français but also keeps Lusitano horses to demonstrate the 16th and 17th century baroque style of riding and using the Thoroughbreds and Anglo Arabians for Grand Prix dressage.

Visit their website before leaving home to work out what you want to see and do, as well as demonstrations there are local/national/international competitions too, some which Oliver Walter himself may be planning to compete in.
